How to write a good bahasa melayu essay?

As a chinese school student, I used to struggle with my bahasa melayu and my english. After spending some time on bm, actually it is not difficult for a non-native speaker to master the language.

I am not a brilliant student. In order to master a language, you have to read a lot. When I was in my form 1, I was found in a SK-dominated class in a malay school. My bm teacher asked us to buy Dewan Siswa as she would use it for teaching material. The first time I read the magazine, I was dizzy with so many unfamiliar words. What I did was-I underlined all the words that I did not know the meanings and checked them out in my kamus dewan. As the result of that, every single page of my Dewan Siswa was full of underlines and definitions of the words.

In order to write an good essay, you must work on your vocabulary. Learn more words and use it in your essay. Example-- serius, kian, secara tidak langsung, drastik,

Secondly, you must know how to construct a good and correct sentence. For beginner, you should know to write a simple or basic sentence which only consists of SVO-subject, verb and object. And after that you add more words in your basic sentence.

Example:

Kemalangan ialah satu masalah. (A correct sentence)

Kemalangan jalan raya ialah satu masalah. (Desribe the subject)

Kemalangan jalan raya ialah satu masalah yang serius. (Describe the object)

Kemalangan jalan raya ialah satu masalah yang serius di negara kita.

Students are encouraged to learn to expand their sentences.

In a typical essay, it contains 3 major parts-introduction, body and conclusion.

Introduction:

A good introduction should consists of three major parts as well-the main issue (I), elaboration of the issue (E) and the question aroused (Q).

Example:

I--Kemalangan Jalan Raya merupakan satu masalah yang kian serius in negara kita.

E--Saban hari, kita dapat membaca berita tentang kemalangan jalan raya dalam surat khabar.

Q--Persoalannya sekarang, apakah punca-punca berlakunya kemalangan jalan raya di negara kita?

Students are encouraged to write more on the E--the elaboration of the issue. The last line of the introduction (Q) is very important as it leads the readers to the main content of the essay.

Body/Content:

A good essay should have at least 3 main points. A good content paragraph should have 3 main parts-main point (P), elaborations of main point (E), a short conclusion (C).

Example:

P--Punca utama berlakunya kemalangan jalan raya di negara kita ialah kecuaian pemandu. (main point must be distinct and general. You cannot write " kerana pemandu tidak pandai memandu, etc ")

E-- Menurut statistik daripada Kementerian Pengangkutan, hampir 80% daripada kemalangan jalan raya yang berlaku di negara kita adalah disebabkan oleh pemandu. (when you elaborate, you focus on the key word "kecuaian pemandu")

E-- Kebanyakan pemandu ini adalah pemandu yang tidak mematuhi peraturan jalan raya, pemandu yang mabuk ketika memandu dan sebagainya.

E--Kelakuan pemandu yang tidak bertanggungjawab ini bukan sahaja menyebabkan cedera parah atau kematian pada diri mereka, tetapi juga pada pengguna jalan raya lain yang tidak bernasib baik.

C--Oleh itu, pemandu-pemandu di Malaysia haruslah mempunyai kesedaran diri dan lebih bertanggungjawab serta berwaspada ketika memandu.

Last but not least, the conclusion of the essay should have 2main parts-- idiom (I) and action (A).

I-Bak kata pepatah, "hendak seribu daya, tak hendak seriub dalih".

A- Setiap pihak, bukan sahaja kerajaan dan badan berkanun, tetapi juga ibu bapa dan orang-perseorangan haruslah menggembleng tenaga dalam menangani masalah ini.
